Mythology and the Archetypes within

Welcome to the Learning Zone

This website is created as a tool to help aide in teaching about Mythology and its Archetypes. Specifically we will be looking at the Trickster Archetype in mythology and today.

Information about me is located on the About the Author page. Over on the Mythology page is information regarding the Trickster Archetype as well as a tale about the specific trickster, the Coyote, in Native American mythology. Going over to the Blog is where I’ll be discussing Tricksters that I find in media that I consume in day to day life. Lastly, on the Scholarshippage I have some of my academic writing as well as a lesson plan that can be used to teach students about the Trickster Archetype.

Why Mythology?

Mythology is the base of all things. It is how humans explained the forces of nature and events around them. Mythology was and is their culture, a lot can be learned from studying the mythology of other cultures and especially from looking at the archetypes that are found in all cultures myths.

In using mythology to teach, students get the opportunity to learn about different cultures as well as expand their view of the world. Allowing students to learn about different cultures helps to eliminate the temptations of an ethnocentric world view, and expand their understanding of people. Considering how diverse cities have become, it is important to share all cultures in hopes that students do not feel ostracized in their communities or in schools.

By teaching students about archetypes we give students a tool box to use in their critical thinking of the media they consume in day to day life. To observe archetypes in media, students can further their understanding of the ways in which tv, books, and movies use them to create memorable characters. It is a great way to give students tools that they can continue to use throughout their lives.
